Delray Beach
Delray Beach started as Linton, after Michigan congressman William S. Linton, who bought land here in 1894 and sold plots to settlers. After the freeze of 1898 drove many of them away, the settlement was renamed Delray in 1901, after a neighborhood in Detroit. Japanese farmers from the nearby Yamato Colony were part of early town life, remembered today at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. The town incorporated in 1911, became the City of Delray Beach in 1927, and is home to about 66,800 people who know it as the Village by the Sea.
Delray's historic districts, including Del-Ida Park and the Marina Historic District, are full of homes from the 1920s through the early 1940s, while newer single-family homes, townhomes and condos fill the rest of the city.
