Hurricane Andrew made landfall near Cutler Ridge in 1992 and left the area in almost total destruction. The push to rebuild helped lead to incorporation, and in November 2005 voters approved a town charter and picked the name Cutler Bay over Cutler Ridge. About 45,400 people live there today, just west of Biscayne Bay and near Black Point Marina, the largest public marina in the Miami area.
