Homestead
Homestead got its name from the Florida East Coast Railway's extension to Key West. Supplies for the construction camp were addressed to Homestead Country, after the land opened to homesteaders, and engineers shortened it to Homestead. Incorporated on February 8, 1913, it's the second-oldest city in Miami-Dade County after Miami, and it sits between Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park as the gateway to both.
Hurricane Andrew devastated Homestead in August 1992, and much of the city was rebuilt in the years after. It has kept growing since, from about 60,500 residents in 2010 to about 80,700 in 2020, with communities like Keys Gate and Waterstone filling in with single-family homes and townhomes around the historic downtown on Krome Avenue.
